I started CrossFit mostly out of persuasion from my husband and because I have always liked to exercise. As I got involved I then became excited by the prospect that even I could get stronger and faster.
Last summer I set a goal to run a 10 minute mile and to run a 10K, both of which I had never done due to a previous knee injury. Through consistent CrossFit training during the spring, when summer arrived I started running 5k’s and realized my goal of a 10 minute mile. As I continued my training, in late summer I ran my first 10k and maintained that 10 minute mile even though I had never run 6.2 miles at one time! By adding CrossFit Endurance training to my regimen by September I participated in the Red Rock Relay-a 186 mile team run and the Moab Red Rock Relay–a 70 mile run.
I achieved my race goals, however something more important to me also happened along the way. My husband and I moved in with my parents to help care for my dad who had Alzheimer’s disease and later developed prostate cancer. As he deteriorated he couldn’t do things for himself anymore and eventually became bedridden. Caring for him became a physical challenge as he is much larger than me. Multiple times while I was holding him up or using my arms to roll or pull him, I thought to myself how grateful I was for CrossFit that had made me strong enough to perform these functional movements. My sweet dad passed away on March 13th and I will always be grateful for the ability I had to care for him.
Thanks CrossFit Mt Olympus!
